Dear Chapter Members,

It has been awhile since we last communicated and we have done much since then including hosting a dialogue on the opioid epidemic, getting together at a retro arcade bar, and touring a major area water plant. I have enjoyed seeing new faces at these events and getting to meet members from different areas of the city a little better. I look forward to meeting many more of you in the months to come as we move into the last quarter of this chapter year. Where has the time gone?

We are looking ahead to July and beyond as we begin thinking about what we want our chapter to look like next year. This past week, I traveled to Wichita, Kansas with Mariana and Eric, our two vice presidents, to attend the ASSE Region V Operating Committee meeting. There we met other chapter officers from our region to share best practices for membership engagement and development. Over the next few months, you will be seeing some of these changes as well as opportunities for involvement as we explore using social media and forming new committees to improve your member experience. Remember, our chapter is here for you and we want to hear from you, so if you have ideas or would like to get more involved don’t hesitate to contact us at updates@chicago.asse.org. Proposed Amendments to Chapter Bylaws
Posted - Jan 05, 2018

This past August, ASSE members made the historic decision to change the organization’s name to the American Society of Safety Professionals.

ASSE members voted to amend Society bylaws to reflect the new name. As a separately incorporated entity, our chapter needs to hold a separate chapter member vote to change the name in our bylaws, as well.

To learn more about these proposed changes:

We will hold a member vote on these proposed changes at an upcoming meeting of the chapter.

President’s Message

It has been wonderful to see many new faces at our meetings thus far this chapter year. Since our last newsletter we have held two meetings. The first of which was our inaugural networking social that was held at Lagunitas Brewery on October 19th. This was a valuable opportunity to meet members normally constrained from attending our traditional monthly meetings. ASSE professionals traveled from as far south as South Chicago Heights, IL and as far east as Whiting, IN. It was interesting to see firsthand how our membership is expanding even beyond safety professionals as one such attendee I met is a certified case manager (CCM) in the professional healthcare industry.  Our plan is that this social is the first of a few similar events that we will organize during this chapter year. For our November meeting, we went back to Cucina Biagio for luncheon technical talk focused on the OSHA injury reporting system.  We had a solid turnout for this event and there was great discussion on the implementation of this online system.

During the next two months, in December and January we will be partnering with other organizations for our meetings. In December, during the day on the 7th we will be partnering witht the two other Chicagoland ASSE Chapters for a volunteer event at the Northern Ilinois Food Bank.  Then on Friday, January 5th our chapter will be joining the Society of Casualty Safety Engineers for their annual Worker’s Compensation Update Luncheon.

Just as we have seen new faces these past few months at our meetings I hope many of you can continue to come out and engage with your ASSE chapter.  As always, we welcome further recommendations on how we can further engage you.

Ryan Cole, Chapter President

Former classmates/early career safety pros reunite.
